Team Leader – Underwriting

About the role

Old Mutual is looking for a motivated Team Leader – Underwriting to head its underwriting operations. You will guide a team of underwriters, drive business growth, and ensure compliance with regulatory and company standards.

Key responsibilities

• Lead, coach and mentor a team of underwriters to meet performance targets.
• Prospect new business, conduct client meetings and negotiate terms.
• Oversee preparation and issuance of quotations, policies, endorsements, cover notes and renewals.
• Process policies using Icecash, Zinara Licensing platforms and ensure accurate data entry.
• Monitor AML compliance and maintain documentation in PURE.
• Assess, underwrite and approve complex risks following guidelines.
• Conduct risk surveys and implement risk‑management measures.
• Develop and manage sales pipelines, retain existing clients and handle renewals.
• Manage relationships with brokers, reinsurers and other stakeholders.
• Oversee reinsurance placement and credit control for timely premium collection.
• Assist with claims queries and identify process improvement opportunities.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Insurance and Risk Management.
• Minimum 5 years’ experience in short‑term insurance, underwriting and portfolio management.
• Proven leadership or supervisory experience in an insurance environment.
• Strong knowledge of insurance regulations, AML requirements and industry best practices.
• Excellent communication, relationship management and customer service skills.
