Software Developer / Programmer – Full‑time Faculty Position

About the role

Midlands State University is seeking a qualified Software Developer / Programmer to join its Faculty of Science and Technology. The role involves designing, building, testing and maintaining software solutions that support teaching, research and administrative activities.

Key responsibilities

• Develop, test, deploy and maintain web‑based and mobile applications for academic and research projects.
• Collaborate with academic staff and students on software innovation and research initiatives.
• Provide technical guidance, mentorship and training to students working on development projects.
• Maintain and enhance existing departmental software systems, websites, databases, APIs and cloud‑based solutions.
• Ensure software quality through testing, debugging, documentation and version control.
• Implement security best practices and support e‑learning platforms and digital learning tools.

Required profile

• BSc Honours Degree in Computer Science or Computer Systems Engineering.
• Professional certifications in the field are an advantage.
• At least one year of relevant post‑qualification experience is desirable.

Required skills

• Proficiency in Java, Python, C#, JavaScript, PHP and C++.
• Experience with web and mobile application development.
• Knowledge of Agile, Scrum and DevOps methodologies.
• Hands‑on experience with MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQL Server and MongoDB.
• Familiarity with Git version control.
• Experience with cloud platforms and containerisation technologies.
• Understanding of software testing, debugging and quality‑assurance practices.
