Scriptwriter - Radio Drama Campaign

About the role

Development Media International (DMI) Zambia is running a campaign to encourage couples to attend all antenatal and postnatal appointments and to prompt parents to seek immediate treatment for children with symptoms of malaria, pneumonia and diarrhoea. It is recruiting a consultant scriptwriter in Lusaka to write memorable, engaging 1-minute radio drama scripts that promote these behaviours. The role reports to the Country Manager, starts flexibly, is on a consultancy basis and is paid per script fee.

Key responsibilities

• Brainstorm, develop and refine script ideas with the creative team, aligned to campaign themes and objectives and guided by a message brief.
• Write concise, engaging and emotionally resonant 1-minute radio drama scripts for parents and caregivers of children aged 0-5 years.
• Incorporate feedback from pretesting sessions to improve clarity and impact.
• Suggest ways to integrate sound effects and music to enhance listener engagement.

Required profile

• Proven experience in radio scriptwriting with a portfolio of engaging work; less experienced writers with very high-standard writing will also be considered.
• Understanding of local culture and audience, especially rural audiences.
• Familiarity with maternal and child health topics is an advantage.

Required skills

• Strong writing skills, able to convey clear messages concisely and compellingly.
• Ability to create relatable characters, vivid scenes and emotional connections using only dialogue and sound effects.
• Collaborative spirit and openness to feedback.
