Principal Software Engineer

About the role

Old Mutual is looking for a Principal Software Engineer to lead and enforce its Software Engineering practice across a range of digital systems, including mobile apps, web platforms, USSD, SMS, mobile payments, workflow solutions and core financial and insurance information systems.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the Software Engineering Economics and Architecture practice, advising on feasibility and solution options.
• Own the end‑to‑end delivery process, championing agile development, DevOps and automation from inception to launch.
• Directly design and build integrated digital systems covering front‑end, microservices, workflow and core financial services.
• Provide engineering thought leadership to shape the group’s technology strategy.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or equivalent experience.
• 5+ years as a Full‑Stack Software Engineer delivering complex projects.
• Proven leadership or mentorship experience within development teams.
• Strong problem‑solving, debugging and performance‑optimization skills.
