Paediatrician – Tertiary Orthopaedic & Plastic/Burn Reconstruction

About the role

The paediatrician will provide expert medical management for children undergoing tertiary orthopaedic and plastic/burn reconstructive surgery. You will develop and deliver comprehensive pre‑ and post‑operative care, focusing on high‑risk, syndromic and acutely unwell patients.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct regular inpatient ward rounds, outpatient clinics and pre‑operative assessments for surgical patients, including routine assessments for children under 5 and those with syndromic conditions.
• Lead evaluation and management of acutely unwell surgical inpatients, overseeing high‑dependency and major post‑operative cases.
• Serve as the primary medical escalation point for junior staff, managing complex non‑surgical issues such as infections, fluid/metabolic imbalances and analgesia.
• Drive combined medical‑surgical programmes such as Cleft Lip/Palate care, Osteogenesis Imperfecta clinics and the Resuscitation (PALS) team.
• Partner with pharmacy, the Drugs & Therapeutics Committee and quality‑patient‑safety managers to refine clinical guidelines and enhance patient safety.
• Lead clinical governance and quality improvement initiatives, participating in Morbidity & Mortality reviews and developing evidence‑based protocols.
• Educate and mentor junior medical staff, clinical fellows and nursing personnel on the medical management of paediatric surgical patients.

Required profile

• Medical degree with successful completion of a residency and fellowship in paediatrics.
• Specialist certification (MRCPCH, MMed Paeds, FCPaed or equivalent) and a current unrestricted paediatric licence on the Specialist Register.
• Minimum two years experience in a hospital setting.
• ACLS, BLS and PALS certification (or ability to update within the hospital).
