Laboratory Technician – Applied Mathematics & Statistics

About the role

The Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics at Midlands State University is seeking a dedicated Laboratory Technician to manage and support its computer laboratories. The role involves ensuring that students and staff have reliable access to statistical and mathematical software for teaching, research, and examinations.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain and troubleshoot the department’s computer labs, including hardware, printers, networking and audiovisual equipment.
• Install, configure, and update statistical and mathematical software packages such as R, Python, MATLAB, Mathematica and Maple.
• Provide technical assistance to academic staff and students during practical sessions, research projects and exams.
• Assist with procurement, inventory control and maintenance of laboratory consumables and equipment.
• Support the setup and upkeep of departmental servers, databases and online teaching platforms.
• Keep accurate records of equipment, software licences, maintenance schedules and lab usage.
• Deliver technical support for seminars, workshops, conferences and outreach activities.

Required profile

• Honours degree (minimum 2.1) in Applied Mathematics, Computational Science, Applied Statistics or a related discipline from a recognised institution.
• Demonstrated knowledge or experience with major statistical and mathematical software packages.

Required skills

• Proficiency in R, MATLAB, Python, Mathematica and Maple.
• Ability to install, configure and maintain software and hardware in a university lab environment.
• Basic networking and server administration skills.
