Head of Legal (Banking)

About the role

The Head of Legal will provide high‑level strategic legal advice to senior management and business units of CBZ Bank, guiding corporate decisions and major initiatives. This senior position is responsible for overseeing legal aspects of financial transactions, regulatory compliance, and risk management across the bank’s operations.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver strategic legal counsel on mergers, acquisitions, financial contracts and regulatory changes, ensuring alignment with the bank’s long‑term goals.
• Draft, negotiate and review complex financial agreements, safeguarding the bank’s interests and mitigating legal risk.
• Monitor local and international legislation, assess its impact, and advise senior management on necessary actions.
• Lead the management of legal disputes, external counsel selection and oversight, and provide guidance to the Board of Directors.
• Develop and maintain internal legal policies, risk‑management frameworks and training programmes for staff.

Required profile

• Law degree from a recognized university; Master’s in Law or Business Administration is an advantage.
• 6‑8 years of corporate legal experience, preferably in the financial services sector.
• Membership or accreditation with the Law Society of Zimbabwe and relevant certifications (e.g., ICSA, CGRC, CGEIT, CCEP, CRMA).
• Strong understanding of corporate governance, regulatory requirements and ability to analyse complex legal issues.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills with proven negotiation ability.
